Bracing is the stiffening of an area between girders by means of diagonal member elements. Bracing can be used to stabilize a single structural component (shear panel) and for stiffening the entire structure.
The classic application of bracing is the transfer of horizontal loads to the components or the structure. This is often referred to as wind bracing.
