As of May 2024, all SMS Group locations are in one place. With its five office modules, they form a cog wheel structure. A foil-cushioned roof with a diameter of 82 m (269 ft) spans the inner courtyard with a height of 20 m (65.6 ft). The roof has a total area of 5,100 m² (54,896 ft²) and allows the more than 2,000 employees to move between the buildings in a constantly dry environment.
Dlubal customer formTL was responsible for the technical processing of the roof structure as well as the structural design of the cable and steel structures to achieve a cable structure subjected to tension according to the Geiger-dome principle. The structure is based on a compression ring with a circumferential steel box girder and 40 under-tensioned radial cables with a double set of cables.
Furthermore, the engineers of formTL developed the cable nodes, the elevation for the ETFE cushions, the steel box girder, and the cable web connections to the compression ring. Its floating support on the solid module buildings with a fixed support, a radially displaceable support on the opposite side, and eight additional friction supports ensure a secure hold.
With this courtyard roofing, Dlubal customer formTL created a very interesting customer project using RFEM.
