Kinetic Pavilion at Chateau Radíč, Czech Republic

The kinetic pavilion, built in the gardens of the chateau Radíč in the Sedlčany region, Czech Republic, is a modern tribute to Roman architecture. Inspired by the Temple of Goddess Vesta in the Forum Romanum, it combines a traditional octagonal column base with an innovative use of wood instead of marble. The kinetic element contributes to its uniqueness and the impressive combination of history and modern approach.

Our customer, TIMBER DESIGN s.r.o., is the author of the design solution and the supplier of the turnkey construction.

About Project

The octagonal kinetic pavilion is based on the structure of two overlapping squares that affect the layout of the floor, columns, and roof. The pavilion has transparent columns and roof, all made of timber, and is equipped with 16 movable panels. These panels allow for changing the appearance of the pavilion, adapt to the weather, and control the light and ambiance in the space. The lifting mechanism of the panels is remotely controlled and provides an impressive moment that gives the building a lively and changing character.

Structural Engineering Solution

The stability of this structure is ensured by four steel columns fixed in a concrete ring foundation, which are hidden inside the visible timber columns and reach a height of (~ 6.6 ft). This height provides sufficient space for visitors to freely access the pavilion, as well as for the steel cable system above their heads, which are connected to the circular in the column heads, ensuring rigidity of the entire structure. The round ring is designed as a triangular spatial truss to which rafters are fixed, pointing towards the center of the structure. Combined with steel tie rods, they form the upright roof structure, which also supports the revolving wind vane. The pavilion is covered with a membrane made of transparent ETFE foil.

Solutions with Dlubal Software

The structure was designed in RFEM 6 using the Timber Design, Steel Design, and Form-Finding add-ons for structural timber, steel, and membrane design. The cutting pattern was also designed directly in RFEM. The wind loads were analyzed using RWIND.
