Tenso CARP Project at the Monumental Stadium, Argentina

Club Atlético River Plate's Monumental, Argentina's largest football stadium with a capacity for nearly 85,000 spectators, has recently renovated part of its equipment. The improvements include the installation of a tensioned roof in the vicinity of the stadium's main entrance, which will provide shelter for a designated hospitality area.

Structure

The prestressed textile membrane is connected to a perimeter anchoring structure and a central steel support structure. This allows for the development of a very creative geometric solution, both in plan and elevation to resolve the covering of the space, which is flavored with its own lighting in the red and white colors of the club.

Structural Analysis

Using the RFEM program together with the Form-Finding, Cutting Pattern, Stability Analysis, and Steel Design add-ons, engineers Agustín Alvarez and Daniel Isola have designed the aesthetic and strength aspects of the membrane geometry, including obtaining the flat, folded pattern segments. The perimeter steel structure, configured with a flat metal grid, serves to support the membrane and the lateral glass enclosure, while the interior arches in a spatial metal grid of tubular profiles create the sinuous apex of the roof.

In the strength and stability design, a high deformation resolution with imperfections has been used, including a detailed study of the possible water impoundment, as well as a computational CFD wind load analysis using RWIND.
