Member Nonlinearities

Some member types already have nonlinear properties: In the case of a tension member, for example, the strain increases linearly with the tensile force, but compressive forces are not absorbed. Member nonlinearities can be used to represent other nonlinear relations between the axial force and strain in a member model.

Member nonlinearities can only be assigned to Beam, Rigid, Truss, and Stiffness member types.

Type

Various nonlinearity types are available for selection in the list. The properties are symbolized in the dialog graphic.

Failure if tension

The member absorbs compressive forces, but not tensile force.

Failure if compression

The member absorbs tensile forces, but not compressive force.

Failure if tension - with slippage

The member cannot absorb any tensile forces. Compressive forces are absorbed as soon as the deformation ux is overcome.

Failure if compression - with slippage

The member cannot absorb any compressive forces. Tensile forces are absorbed as soon as the deformation ux is overcome.

Slippage

The member absorbs axial forces only after having exceeded a strain or shortening by the value ux.

Failure under tension

The member absorbs compressive forces without limitation, but fails when tensile forces exceed Nt.

Yielding under tension

The member absorbs compressive forces without limitation, but only a maximum tensile force of Nt. If the strain increases, the tensile force remains constant in the member.

Failure under compression

The member absorbs tensile forces without limitation but fails when compressive forces exceed Nc.

Yielding under compression

The member absorbs tensile forces without limitation, but only a maximum compressive force of Nc. If the strain increases, the compressive force remains constant in the member.

Failure

The member fails when the compressive force Nc or the tensile force Nt is reached.

Yielding

The member starts to yield when the compressive force Nc or the tensile force Nt is reached: If the strain increases, the force cannot be increased.
