As the geothermal energy market is continuously increasing, the German company BAUER Maschinen GmbH has developed a new deep drilling rig, while Dlubal customer Ing.-Büro H.-U. Möller was in charge of the plant's structural analysis. The system is used to make borings reaching to a depth of 22,965 ft in the area of geothermal energy, oil, or gas.
In addition, it is possible to extend existing drillings using modern drilling technology. The drill rig was built in Germany and distributed worldwide.

The modal relevance factor is a result of the linear stability analysis and qualitatively describes the degree of participation of individual members in a specific mode shape.
To be able to evaluate the influence of local stability phenomena of slender structural components, RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 provide you with the option of performing a linear critical load analysis on the cross-section level. The following article explains the basics of the calculation and the result interpretation.
For the stability verification of members using the equivalent member method, it is necessary to define effective or lateral-torsional buckling lengths in order to determine a critical load for stability failure. In this article an RFEM 6-specific function is presented, by which you can assign an eccentricity to the nodal supports and thus influence the determination of the critical bending moment considered in the stability analysis.
The CSA S16:19 Stability Effects in Elastic Analysis method in Annex O.2 is an alternative option to the Simplified Stability Analysis Method in Clause 8.4.3. This article will describe the requirements of Annex O.2 and application in RFEM 6.
The modal relevance factor (MRF) can help you to assess to which extent specific elements participate in a specific mode shape. The calculation is based on the relative elastic deformation energy of each individual member.
The MRF can be used to distinguish between local and global mode shapes. If multiple individual members show significant MRFs (for example, > 20%), the instability of the entire structure or a substructure is very likely. On the other hand, if the sum of all MRFs for an eigenmode is around 100%, a local stability phenomenon (for example, buckling of a single bar) can be expected.
Furthermore, the MRF can be used to determine critical loads and equivalent buckling lengths of certain members (for example, for stability design). Mode shapes for which a specific member has small MRF values (for example, < 20%) can be neglected in this context.
The MRF is displayed by mode shape in the result table under Stability Analysis → Results by Members → Effective Lengths and Critical Loads.
In the "Group of Imperfection Cases" imperfection case, you can enter several geometric imperfection cases. This allows you to carry out GMNIA analyses where several geometric imperfections have to be superimposed.
