Loads with large eccentricities

According to EN 1997-1 [1] 6.5.4, no special measures are to be taken if the following applies in general for a rectangular base:

The formulas refer to the limitation of 2. Core width, which is elliptical in shape. The eccentricities ex and ey are considered separately.

In the case of rectangular foundations, the eccentricity of the load resultant may not exceed 1/3 of the side length; in the case of circular foundations, it may not exceed 0.6 of the radius. If the eccentricity is beyond the mentioned limit values, special precautions must be taken according to Clause 2.4.2.

Mark 1: The limitation of the 1st core width is represented by a rhombus.

Mark 2: The limitation of the second core width is represented by an ellipse.

Mark 3: The resultant's point of application is the point at which the entire resulting load acts on the foundation base.
