Extension of the Pierre Menanteau School Complex and Construction of a Multi-Purpose Hall in Le Bouphé, France

The old multi-purpose hall, built in 1970, was demolished. It no longer met the standards and could not be renovated without major investment. The Pierre Menanteau School needed more space and an modernization of this equipment. The municipality has therefore decided to meet all its requirements in one project.
Project Presentation

This project, carried out in the town of Le Bouphé, is divided into two parts.

The first consisted of modernizing and extending the Ecole Pierre Menanteau school, creating two new classrooms, a courtyard and a reconstruction of the school courtyard, including an educational garden.

The second part consisted in creating a new multipurpose hall, consisting of two areas separated by a movable partition: a smaller hall for school functions during the day and associated groups in the evening; and a large hall for sports clubs, groups, events and parties.

The new buildings have been designed to be energy-efficient and are made of biobased materials (straw, wood fibre) in order to reduce the carbon footprint and meet current environmental challenges. This project also includes the reuse of the old wooden floors of the municipal hall.

Structural design

For this project, the company LCA Construction Bois was commissioned to study and create the wood loads, which represent 130 m3, 1,207 m2 of timber frame walls, including 355 m2 of straw insulation, 1,140 m2 of cladding, and 33 exterior carpentry. composite and composite curtainwall.

We are particularly interested in the multipurpose hall. The larger area, used for sports activities among other things, consists of the main structure of four glulam frames with a span length of 18 m and a height of 7 m. The two-pitch roof, which is equipped with photovoltaic panels, is supported by asymmetric tapered beams. Timber frame walls form the two gable bays of the structure, bracing the frame structure. The gable attached to the small hall has a opening of 31 ft, which allows for the installation of a system of movable partitions.

The smaller space adjoining the large hall consists of a timber frame structure and a glued-laminated timber framework forming a multiple roof. The roof overhangs, which include an upper terrace, are supported by steel beams with circular cross-sections.

Structural Analysis Software

The integrated engineering office of the LCA Construction Bois company carried out global modeling of the multi-purpose hall using RFEM 5.

The RF-TIMBER Pro add-on module was used to analyze and design the laminated timber frameworks and timber framing system according to EN 1995.

Since the project is in seismic zone 3, a seismic analysis was carried out with the modules of the RF-DYNAM PRO series.
