Baesweiler, a small German town near Aachen, wanted to return a spoil heap from past mining days, abandoned since 1975, to its citizens and at the same time use this project as a starting point for the development of a technology park. The result was an extraordinary construction challenge. The project was awarded the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2009.
