Question
I get the expression "-1.#J" for rigid and hinged limit stiffness. What should I do?
Answer:
The limit stiffnesses for rigid or hinged connections can be determined according to EN 1993‑1‑8 5.2.2.5 (1). The calculation includes the second moment of area of a beam, the span, the modulus of elasticity, and the frame stiffening. As of version 5.19.01, this information can be defined in detail in Table 1.4 under "Classification". Since this information was not available in the previous versions, but is now queried by the calculation kernel, you get the expression "-1.#J".Open Window 1.4 to fix this. The modulus of elasticity, length, and moment of inertia of the beam are entered automatically. If member divisions are available in the beam, the length may have to be adjusted. It is also necessary to specify the type of stiffening. By default, a stiffened system (Kb = 8) is assumed. After recalculation in the add-on module, the correct limit stiffnesses are obtained.

Understanding steel connection rigidity is crucial in structural design. Often, connections are treated as strictly pinned or rigid, but this can lead to uneconomical or even dangerous designs. Explore how Dlubal Software's RFEM and Steel Joints add-on help verify connection stiffness and moment resistance, ensuring safer and more economical designs.

Moment frame design according to AISC 341-16 is now possible in the Steel Design add-on of RFEM 6. The seismic design result is categorized into two sections: member requirements and connection requirements. This article covers the required strength of the connection. An example comparison of the results between RFEM and the AISC Seismic Design Manual [2] is presented.
