Linear and Quadratic Taper Shapes

After right-clicking a member and selecting "Edit Member", you can find the "Taper Shape" option in the "Options" tab.

Here, you can choose between linear and quadratic applications. This option affects the interpolation of the cross‑sectional area and the second moments of area for the determination of stiffnesses along the member length, and consequently of deformations and internal forces.

In general, the following applies for selecting the taper shape.

  • If the cross-section is reduced in its width or height only, select "Linear".
  • If the cross-section is reduced in both its width and height, select "Quadratic", otherwise the member's stiffness will be overestimated.

The more pronounced the tapering of the cross-section is in both directions, the closer the cross-section properties are to the quadratic approach.
