Pipe as Shear Key in RF-/JOINTS Steel – Column Base Add-on Module
How do I define a pipe as a shear key in RF‑/JOINTS Steel – Column Base add-on module?
Answer:
As a shear key, you can select a cross-section from the list that is already available in the model of RFEM 5 or RSTAB 8. For example, if you want to use a pipe for shear transfer, it must already have been created as a cross-section in the model. You can also define a different cross-section by clicking the "Import Cross-Section from Library" button.
For the shear-type plug, you can define your own material by using the "Info About Material" button (unless you activate the "Use column material also for other connectors" check box in the window 1.1 General Data). Thus, the materials of the column, base plate, and shear key do not need to be identical.
Finally, enter the length of the shear key in the text box.

In addition to the result tables, you can create three-dimensional graphics in RF‑/FRAME‑JOINT Pro and RF‑/JOINTS. This is a realistic representation of a connection to scale.
Table 3.1 of EN 1993‑1‑8:2010‑12 defines the nominal values of the yield strength and the ultimate limit strength of bolts. The bolt classes given here are 4.6, 4.8, 5.6, 5.8, 6.8, 8.8, 10.9. The note for this table states that the National Annex may exclude certain bolt classes. For the NA of Germany, these are the bolt classes 4.8, 5.8, and 6.8.
According to Clause 6.2.2 (6) of EN 1993‑1‑8:2010‑12, you can apply friction using the friction coefficient to design the shear capacity.
The product range of Dlubal Software contains various modules for the design of steel and timber connections. The RF-/JOINTS Steel – Column Base add-on module allows you to analyze footings of hinged or restrained steel column bases. The fastener selection, foundation geometry, and material quality are crucial for the cost-effective and safe design of the column base.
In the ultimate configuration of the steel joint design, you have the option to modify the limit plastic strain for welds.
Using the "Base Plate" component, you can design base plate connections with cast-in anchors. In addition to plates and welds, the design analyzes the anchorage and the steel-concrete interaction.
In the "Edit Section" dialog box, you can display the buckling shapes of the Finite Strip Method (FSM) as a 3D graphic.
