Exploring BIM Capabilities for Life Cycle Assessment in Structural Projects: Towards Sustainable Material Choices

This work demonstrates a workflow integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for sustainable structural decision-making.

The structural model replicates a barraca valenciana, a traditional two-storey rural building from eastern Spain. The structure was analysed using Dlubal RFEM 6 across three design alternatives:

  1. Traditional adobe and timber
  2. Reinforced concrete and steel
  3. Concrete base with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)

The analysis combined Autodesk Revit with RFEM via BIM link, and outputs were used for environmental impact evaluation in One Click LCA. The workflow supports early-stage design assessment and helps compare environmental performance based on structural choices.
