Stability Analysis

Activating Stability Analysis

First of all, it is necessary to calculate the critical load factor as part of a stability analysis. Using this factor, it can be estimated according to Eurocode 3 whether a geometrically linear or a second-order analysis is necessary.

Before you start the calculation, you need to activate the Structure Stability add-on in the Base Data. You can open the Base Data in the toolbar using the Editing General Data button.

Use the Edit Load Case button in the toolbar to open the "Load Cases and Combinations" dialog box. The load cases and design situations can be viewed, created, and edited here. A combination wizard is used to generate the action and load combinations. This can be created in the "Design Situations" tab using the Create New Effective Length button.

The combination wizard setting is used as a default setting for all generated combinations. Therefore, specify the method of analysis used for the calculation. There is also the option to activate the stability analysis.

Calculation

In the middle of the toolbar, you will find a text box where you can select which design situation, load combination, load, or imperfection case should be calculated. Use Show Results to calculate and display the results.

Selecting Design Situation for Calculation

After the calculation, a result summary appears in the table, including the minimum critical load factor and the corresponding load combination.

If you select this load combination in the toolbar, you can display the mode shape for the corresponding critical load factor under the "Stability Analysis" category. The associated mode shapes can also be displayed for the other critical load factors.

Info

In the calculated mode shapes, only the flexural buckling is taken into account, not the lateral-torsional buckling. The following chapters will describe how you can consider the lateral-torsional buckling.
