The RegioTram is a light rail system in Kassel and its surroundings. The German Dlubal Software customer osd Ingenieure from Frankfurt am Main was in charge of the structural planning for the tram station.
Column-free platform roofing
The structural design includes a light and filigree timber-steel construction, which is able to span three platforms without columns and is very attractive. The selected cage arch shape allows the preservation of the overarching station covering system and the use of common elevated chains in the station area and adapts to the barrel-shaped structures of the existing station roofs.
The barrel shell is based on Zollinger construction
The structural model of the roof consists of a barrel shell made of wooden slats, the loads of which are selectively transferred into the reinforced concrete trough by means of a steel box structure. The timber supporting structure is based on Zollinger construction, a single-curved lamellar structure in which the members are arranged in a diamond shape and one member length each extends over two fields.
The main difference of the Zollinger design is the rigid design of the nodes. Due to the flat shell geometry, large bending moments had to be transferred into the node. For this purpose, a new joint system in the form of a plug-in connection with glued-in dowels was developed. This joining system was converted into a guiding detail that could be transferred to all nodes. The roof structure won the Hessian Timber Construction Award in 2008.
