To hide hidden objects in the background, you can find the "Show Hidden Objects in Background" option in the General entry in the Display navigator (see the image). If you inactivate the check box, the objects that are not selected are hidden and no longer visible.
The intensity of transparent, hidden objects can be varied in the program options under Options → Program Options → Settings → "3D Graphics" (see the image).
