FAQ 005571 | Is it possible to define one or more nodes on one or more members automatically?

Question:
Is it possible to define one or more nodes on one or more members automatically?

Answer:
Yes, this can be done quickly and will be useful later for defining effective lengths with intermediate nodes, such as in Tutorial – Steel Design (Frame Beam – Node Types).
The following example shows four possible configurations using the model available to download.

  • One Node on One Member

If you select the "standard" node No. 23 and change the node type to "On Member" in the Main tab, you are redirected to the corresponding tab with member No. 12 detected automatically (1), as well as the position of this node in relation to the member start and the member end (2).

  • Several Nodes on One Member

If you change several "standard" nodes in the same plane as member No. 12 to "On Member" nodes, member No. 12 is still referenced (1), but the positions of the nodes in relation to the start and end are missing due to different possible values (2).

  • Several Nodes with Same Position on Several Members with Same Length

If you change several "standard" nodes in the same plane as node No. 23 to "On Member" nodes, the member numbers are not shown due to different possible values (1), but the position of the nodes in relation to the member start and end is referenced again (2).

  • Several Nodes on Several Members

If you change several "standard" nodes in different positions and planes to "On Member" nodes, neither the member numbers nor the positions of the nodes in relation to the member start and end are displayed, due to the different possible values.

Important

In the last three configurations above, the member numbers and locations are simply hidden, but still correctly referenced. You can check it by clicking OK to confirm the changes.
A property is incorrect or missing if the "Member No." check box shows two red question marks (member end node, member not detected, …).
