Design Supported by FEM – Demonstration of Notches in Timber Structures

Notches are cross-section modifications that occur in both traditional timber construction and modern timber engineering. The resulting mechanical phenomena require the implementation of fracture-mechanics solutions. This bachelor's thesis provides an overview of the structural variety of design checks in the context of geometric deformations and load scenarios.

The currently valid regulation in Eurocode 5 is discussed, and the limitations of this solution approach are demonstrated. The mechanical background is explained, and a brief outline of fracture mechanics approaches and their applicability to the calculation of notched components is provided. Subsequently, the application of a structural solution approach, which allows a comprehensive view of this subject area, is presented. With this strategy, supplementary comparative calculations are conducted in a commercial structural analysis software with the objective of optimizing the configuration of selected modeling parameters.
