There are many arguments in favor of using glass as a load-bearing structural element in the construction industry, especially the favorable properties, such as a high strength and stiffness, the attractive appearance, the ease of maintenance, and unlimited availability, which makes the material attractive. In particular, the effort to make buildings ever more transparent is encouraging the utilization of glass in construction.
The present thesis deals with a steel structure of the planned panorama elevator at the Mainz State Theater, Germany, with a feasibility study on the glass utilization for a stiffening element.
The plan is to stabilize the main stiffening element, which is parallel to the theater facade, by using tension members. The basic consideration of the feasibility study is to stabilize the main stiffener with glass panes instead of the tension members.
