For structural engineers, the ability to integrate CAD and analysis software is critical to ensure that designs are correctly represented and thoroughly analyzed. A prime example of this is the integration between AutoCAD, a widely used CAD program that allows designers to create precise drawings, and structural analysis software like RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9.

RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 support DXF file integration, enabling users to directly import CAD drawings into the program for further analysis and design. This streamlined data transfer between AutoCAD and RFEM 6 enhances productivity while reducing the likelihood of errors. By accurately transferring vital information such as geometry, dimensions, and material properties, this exchange minimizes manual data entry mistakes and accelerates iteration and decision-making processes.

This article provides a general overview of the data exchange options, while the individual import/export functions are explained in more detail in the following Knowledge Base articles:

Importing DXF Data in RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9

RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 provide an intuitive interface for importing DXF data, allowing users to import directly from AutoCAD or a DXF file (see Image 1). It’s important to note that the key difference between the standard DXF format and DXF II (both currently available) lies in their underlying technology. DXF II is built on a more advanced framework, offering enhanced features and greater functionality compared to the older DXF format. The ongoing development is focused on further improving the DXF II technology, with the aim of eventually phasing out the traditional DXF format. In the future, DXF II will become the standard and sole DXF format, replacing the older version.

When importing DXF data directly from AutoCAD, users can seamlessly export or import data without needing to save the active file. The process allows for direct data transfer between AutoCAD and RFEM 6 or RSTAB 9, with the CAD application remaining open. The advanced DXF II technology runs in the background, ensuring that DXF II and AutoCAD provide the same set of features. The older DXF format, however, lacks some of the capabilities offered by DXF II, making it less versatile in comparison.

Once imported, the DXF geometry is converted into structural model elements, allowing users to perform structural analysis based on the CAD drawing’s exact geometry. The import process supports the inclusion of nodes and lines, and members can be imported as well. For this to happen, the layer must contain the relevant cross-section information and, optionally, the material name. Layer names are adopted as cross-section names, with the first material from the predefined materials being assigned automatically. However, if a layer name corresponds to a recognized Dlubal cross-section and material, those will be used as well.

Additionally, surface imports are supported if the object in CAD is a 3D face. Users also have the option to import DXF files as background layers. These can be used as guide objects, enabling faster and more efficient modeling.

Advantages of Importing DXF Data into RFEM 6/RSTAB 9

1. Easy Editing and Adjustment: RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 offer multiple options for modifying imported DXF files. Users can adjust geometries, add or remove elements, and define boundary conditions for the structural model, all within the software environment.

2. Layer Management: RFEM 6/RSTAB 9 supports the importation of multiple layers from DXF files, allowing users to handle various design components separately. For example, layers such as boundary lines, loads, and structural components can be assigned distinct attributes within the software, enabling a well-organized model.

3. Compatibility and Flexibility: RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 ensure that the integrity of the original DXF drawing is preserved during the import process. Additionally, it allows users to manage changes made in AutoCAD while continuing to work within RFEM 6/RSTAB 9, making it a valuable tool when collaborating with other professionals who rely on AutoCAD for drafting.

Exporting DXF Files

RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 also offer the option to export structural models as DXF files, enhancing collaboration with CAD professionals. The basic features of the export process are similar to those of the import process and will be discussed in more detail in a separate KB article. It is important to note that, as mentioned earlier, the DXF II interface differs from the standard DXF interface. In addition to exporting nodes and lines, the DXF II interface supports the export of FE meshes, deformed structures, dimension lines, and more, providing a broader range of capabilities for comprehensive data exchange.

Závěr a výhled

By supporting the integration of DXF files from AutoCAD, RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 enable engineers to fully leverage the strengths of both platforms. The seamless data transfer between CAD and structural analysis software streamlines workflows, improving both efficiency and accuracy in structural design and analysis. This interoperability not only enhances productivity but also fosters better collaboration throughout the engineering process.
