Interior View of Airship Hangar in Mühlheim an der Ruhr
Sustainable airship hangar in Mühlheim with timber supporting structure and recycled foundations, naturally illuminated
The interior view of an airship hangar in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Germany, shows a sustainable supporting structure made of 557 tons of glued-laminated timber, which was constructed using 15 two-hinged arches spanning 42 m and consisting of 592 nodes. The substructure is based on recycled materials, since the foundations of the previous hall structure were broken up and reused, with 8000 m³ of soil being excavated. A recyclable aluminum facade protects the interior, which is naturally illuminated by a two-story glass joint on the west side. The dimensions of the hall are 92 x 42 m with a height of 26 m, whereby the structural analyses were carried out using RFEM. © Photographer Annika Feuss
