Typified Connections in Steel Building Construction - DSTV Guidelines

The RSTAB add-on module DSTV (German Steel Construction Association) designs moment resisting and pinned I-beam connections for members according to the German guideline "Typified Connections in Steel Building Construction". The design capacities are determined in accordance with the following standards:

  •  DIN 18800-1:1990-11,
  •  DIN V ENV 1993-1-1/A2:202-05.

You can design moment resisting connections by means of a flush or extended end plate, by coped connections or pinned beam connections using end plates and angles.

The connections can be visualized efficiently in the rendering mode. The program displays all required structural dimensions for end plates and angles as well as the corresponding hole arrangements.

Features

  • Design of moment resisting and pinned connections for I-shaped rolled cross-sections, optionally according to DIN 18800 or Eurocode 3 (types IH, IW, IS, IK and IG)
  • Flush and extended moment-resisting connections with automatic dimensioning of required bolt sizes (types IH1 to IH4)
  • Option to check or suggest possible column cross-sections for moment resisting connections
  • Check of required thickness of load-bearing member in shear connections
  • Indication of decisive reason for failure in column-beam connections
  • Output of all required structural details such as appliances, hole arrangements, necessary extensions, bolt number, end plate dimensions and welds
  • Output of stiffnesses Sj,ini for bending-resistant connections
  • Pinned connections with normal and long angles (types IW and IG)
  • Pinned connections using end plates with mounting either on web only or on web and flange (type IS)
  • Option to combine coped connections (IK) with pinned end plates (IS) and web cleat connections (IW)
  • Documentation of available loadings and comparison with load capacities
  • Output of design ratio for each individual connection
  • Automatic determination of governing internal forces for several load cases and connection nodes

Input

After starting the DSTV add-on module, you select the connection type (moment resisting or pinned I-beam connection). Then you can select the individual member ends in the RSTAB model. DSTV recognizes the cross-section automatically, including corresponding material, and checks if a connection according to the DSTV guidelines is possible. Furthermore, the program allows for structurally similar connections on several locations of the framework structure, even if this is not required by an exact design of internal forces. Depending on the connection type, further specifications for the design can be defined.

Design

DSTV facilitates the calculation of the following connection types:

  • Moment resisting IH beam-column connections with end plate (flush, extended above or below)
  • Pinned IW I-beam connections with bolted angles
  • Pinned IS I-beam connections with welded end plate (on flange and web, or on web only)
  • Pinned IG I-beam connections, flush with top edge, and with long angles
  • Pinned IK I-beam connections, flush with top edge (with coped connections)

To facilitate a comparison of the loadings with the load capacities specified in the DSTV guidelines, the module converts the positive and negative RSTAB internal forces into positive DSTV loadings.

The DSTV guidelines describe in detail the calculation according to DIN 18800 and Eurocode 3 for each connection type. The analyses and results are summarized in tables, sorted by type of cross-section, material and bolt stiffness.

The comprehensive DSTV guidelines are stored in a special database integrated in the add-on module DSTV. Each connection is characterized by a unique alpha-numeric code. Considering the relevant definitions of the DSTV connection type (IH, IW, IS, IG and IK) and the cross-section that is used, you can filter the available DSTV connections. Thus, conclusions concerning the ultimate limit state for the selected connection are possible.

Results

Subsequent to the RSTAB calculation, DSTV shows the design values of the internal forces for the individual load cases. The design contrasts the loadings with the resistance and determines the design ratios. All details related to the connection are clearly arranged in tables.

The printout report of the RSTAB structure also includes the DSTV connection design. Depending on the subject, the tabular printout is described by additional graphics in the margin. The rendered views including all dimensions can be printed as a draft for the design engineer.

Finally, it is possible to export all tables of the module to MS Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc or in a CSV file without any problems. All specifications required for the export are defined in a special transfer menu.
