CONNECT 8.xx

Shear Connections  
With the RSTAB add-on module CONNECT, you can dimension three types of shear connections typical for steel constructions, performing the design according to

 DIN 18800-1:1990-11.

The connection can be clearly documented with graphics and numerical values in the printout report. It is also possible to print a dimensioned 3D graphic of the connection.

You can design connections for I-sections using
  • web cleats on one or both sides,
  • end plates,
  • seating cleats and end plates to secure the position.

CONNECT is completely integrated in RSTAB and provides, in addition to the numerical selection of members to be designed, a comfortable graphical selection for the member ends.

The connections can be designed either by the program itself or according to user-defined specifications concerning thickness and dimensions of the structural components as well as welds and hole sizes. CONNECT automatically checks the entries regarding the applicable minimum distances and recommended weld thicknesses. 

The bolts' strength grades 4.6, 5.6, 8.8 and 10.9 can be selected for the sizes M12 to M36 as precision or black bolts. The connections can be carried out with the steel grades S 235 and S 355.

When using CONNECT, you are best prepared for modifications in the structural system, because connections already entered are always designed automatically for the current cross-sections or internal forces. CONNECT works in the usual RSTAB environment and can be used intuitively.
1.1 General Data
 

Design


For the cleat connection pinned to a connecting structure, you can decide if you want to take into account only the shear or the axial force, or a combination of both forces. The cleat bending moment, resulting from the available forces, and arising from the eccentrically effective tensile force and the shear force introduction which depends on the cleat length, is considered by the design calculation as well.

If you select the connection with end plate, the shear force is transferred across the end plate to the load-bearing member. The plate can be welded on a flange only, on both flanges or on the web.

If the third connection type is selected, the shear force is transferred through a seating cleat that is welded to the load-bearing member. The beam is secured additionally by an end plate connection.

Results 


The results tables show all results of the layout and the designs in detail. In addition, interactive graphics are displayed for all intermediate results, which allows for a quick and comfortable evaluation.

Due to the clear results overview, you can see immediately if the design has been fulfilled. In case a design failed, the corresponding table row is highlighted. The output includes member number, member side, governing load case/group/ combination, loading and load capacity, design ratio and, in the comment column, the governing element of the connection.

The connection can be represented realistically in the 3D rendering mode including dimension. Furthermore, it is possible to integrate the connection results in the global RSTAB printout report. The report shows all input data and results as documentation prepared for the test engineer.

Finally, it is possible to export all program tables to MS Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc or in a CSV file without any problems. All specifications required for the export are defined in a special transfer menu.
